Monro Street
New Residential House
Located in Wellington’s sea-side suburb of Seatoun, this flat yet narrow site presented several challenges. It is exposed to the prevailing northly winds from the harbour and the two neighbouring sections compromise the beach views, which are less than 70 meters away. The open plan living on the ground floor was designed to provide multiple indoor and outdoor living options. A covered alfresco dining area to the north-west and two further courtyards with a north-easterly and southerly aspect provide flexibility depending on time of day and wind direction. A small office nook and TV room off the main living area provide more intimate spaces when required. Bedrooms are located on the second floor along with further indoor and outdoor living spaces. The top of the stairwell provides a dramatic view shaft to the beach which will be maintained even after proposed properties are built on neighbouring sections. A deck from this area at the top of the stairs and one from the main bedroom allow the occupiers to enjoy the seaside views and atmosphere. The building form is simple and strong with a stripped back palette of materials that responds to the dramatic Wellington coastline. Balancing the clients desire for a simple beach lifestyle with convenience of modern living has resulted in this interesting and beautiful home.
